Babywearing
What is Babywearing
Babywearing is the practice of wearing a baby in a sling or other form of carrier. Babywearing is not a new idea and has been practiced for centuries around the world.

According to Dr. Sears babies worn by their caregivers:

  1. 1. Cry Less: According to a study done by a group of pediatricians in Montreal, babies worn just a little as three hours a day cry an average of 43% less than babies not worn by their caregivers.

  2. 2. Learn More: Since babies being worn spend less time crying they spend more time in a state of quiet alertness, which is when babies are able to learn the most. Research also shows that babies being worn have enhanced visual and auditory alertness.

  3. 3. Are More Organized: Babywearing imitates the environment of the womb. By extending the womb experience, the babywearing caregiver provides an external regulating system that balances the irregular and disorganized tendencies of the baby.

  4. 4. Get "Humanized" Earlier: A baby being worn sees and hears what their caregiver sees and hears and to some extent even feels what they feel. As a result they are more aware of the world around them and also are more a part of the lives of their caregivers.

  5. 5. Are Smarter: Babies being worn are intimately involved in the caregiver's world, they are exposed to and participates in, the environmental stimuli that caregiver selects and are protected from those stimuli that overload their developing nervous system. They so intimately participate in what is their caregiver is doing that their developing brain stores a myriad of experiences, called patterns of behavior.

Our Experience
We love Babywearing because it has made our lives as moms easier! We think most moms love the idea of wearing their babies due to the high sales of very expensive carriers found at baby store chains. Which is how we got started, until our babies started weighing over 10 pounds and our backs were killing us! We ended up at a workshop learning how to correctly wear our little ones and replaced those awful carriers with ones that actually worked! Here is why we love them:

  • ▪ They allow us to have both hands free to do things like clean, make dinner, garden, or play with our older children at the park.

  • ▪ When nothing else would comfort our very colicky preemies, we would strap them on and they would stop crying in less than 5 minutes.

  • ▪ We didn't have to spend the money on pricey strollers (or double strollers) and then lug them around with us everywhere we went. Our carriers fit perfectly in our diaper bags.

  • ▪ We found that wearing our babies helped us get through the first few weeks with the baby blues.

  • ▪ It is easier for us to go places. We didn't have to worry about fitting a stroller through tight aisles or what to do with the infant carseat when our babies decided they no longer wanted to stay in the carseat.

  • ▪ When worn correctly they absolutely, positively do not hurt our backs.

  • ▪ Even our husbands love to wear them.

  • ▪ They are great for outdoor activities such as hiking.

  • ▪ We can even comfortably wear our children after they weigh over 30 pounds if needed.

Our Products

The above are just some of the reasons why we have chosen to carry the carriers we do. We use and love every single one of them ourselves! These ring slings are made by a local work at home mom and we absolutely love them! The rings have been tested to hold up to 200 pounds! These slings are one of the most versatile carriers available since they can be worn in a variety of ways. They are also the easiest to use for hands free nursing of a newborn. Our newborns loved to nap in them in the newborn hold, our older babies love to be carried like a kangaroo so they can look all around, and our toddlers love to be carried on our hips. These slings start at $55 for a basic fabric selection.

Baby Hawk
Our BabyHawk Mei Teis are also made by work at home moms. It is possible to find less expensive mei teis online, however, we love the BabyHawk for several reasons. First, it comes with the softest, most durable shoulder pads we have ever worn. They also are available in a never-ending variety of colors and prints, as well as organic fabrics. They also hold up to repeated washings and hold up much better when compared to other mei teis on the market. In our opinion they are well worth the slightly higher price. These carriers are the most user friendly. They are incredibly easy to put on, so much so, that our husbands started out being able to use them without our help. These carriers are ideal for quick trips when you just need something you can put on fast. We also love them for hikes and newborns love to be snuggled up in them for naps. These mei teis are also available in a toddler size. The BabyHawks will hold up to 40 pounds, but taller children can grow out of them before they hit 40 pounds. Our BabyHawks start at $80.

Wombfruitbusinesscard11
Our Wombfruit Wraps are made and designed by a stay at home mom and doula in South Georgia. Our favorite thing about the  Wrap is that it is so comfortable! It feels just like wearing another shirt. It also holds your baby close to your body. It is our only carrier that can be used to carry twins. We use our Wombfruit wrap when we know that we will be out for longer periods of time because it is so comfortable and it also is a carrier that takes a little bit longer to put on and off. However, it is so comfortable that once you have it on, if you have to take your baby out of the wrap, you can still keep the wrap on until you are ready to place your baby back in the wrap. If we know we are going to be using the wrap we often put it on before we even leave the house while we are getting dressed.Another great thing about our wraps is they are made with gauze fabric which is an amazingly breathable material. These wraps are perfect for summer baby wearing. Each wrap also comes with a really cute custom made storage bag. Our Wombfruit Wraps are our least expensive carriers at $42.
