How many cloth diapers will I need? The answer to this question depends on the age of your child. If you have a newborn we recommend 15-24 diapers depending on how often you would like to wash them. For babies 6-12 months we recommend 12-15 diapers. For toddlers over 1 year we recommend 10-15 diapers.
How do you wash cloth diapers? There are many different ways to wash your cloth diapers and there is no BEST way. Your wash routine will greatly depend on your specific washing machine and they type of water you have at your house. Here is the wash routine we recommend to get started with for a top loading machine:
Dump all solids into the toilet, unless your baby is exclusively breastfed
Start with a cold wash and cold rinse, at the beginning of the cycle sprinkle 1/2 cup baking soda over the diapers
Follow with a HOT wash, cold rinse with 1/4 a detergent cup of arm and hammer sensitive and 1 tablespoon bac-out in the wash cycle.
Some washers may need an additional cold rinse. To determine if you need this rinse lift up the lid on your washing machine during the prior rinse cycle. If there are still bubbles in your water you will need to do an extra rinse. If not you can skip this step.
Hang dry or tumble dry low in the dryer
If you have a front loading machine contact us. Washing routines for a front loader vary even more due to the wide range of options on these machines.
NEVER use bleach or a sanitize cycle on your dipaers. Doing so will void your warranty on your diapers and can cause problems over time.
Getting started may seem overwhelming but once you get the hang of it,it is super easy. We are always here for help and support.
What type of detergent should I use for my diapers? We recommend arm and hammer sensitive for our local customers. The type of detergent you use will vary greatly depending on your location. Click here for a great Detergent chart. Here are few things to avoid
Any plant based detergents- they contain natural oils that will cause repelling on your diapers
Any detergents with scents, dyes, enzymes, or other chemical additives- they can cause chemical burns on your baby.
NEVER EVER use fabric softener it will also cause repelling
Will my water bill go up?If it does it will be minuscule, maybe $2 a month
Is wearing my baby safe?Wearing your baby correctly is very safe and beneficial for both mom and baby (see our Baby wearing page for more information and statistics). Your baby or child should always be close enough to you that you can kiss their little head. Wearing your baby incorrectly is not safe. We are always available to help you learn to wear your baby correctly and with every baby wearing purchase you will be given paper instructions as well as links to picture and video instructions. You alone are responsible for the safety of your child.
